THERE IS ONLY ONE CONDITION FOR DIVORCE - PST KUMUYI

According to Jesus, there is only one condition for divorce:

According to data collated by the United States government between 2000 to 2014, it is reported that there is one divorce approximately every 36 seconds. That's about 2,400 divorce cases per day, 16,800 divorces per week and 876,000 divorces a year.

But was this the way God intended for the first institution He created? God the creator of human and marriage was clear about His purpose and plan for marriage; for support and companionship as a lifelong relationship. God was convinced about this as the best for humans but when we stray away from the original plan as we see from the statistics above, the results are usually pathetic.

Quite unfortunately, the divorce rate in the church is now at par with that of the society where many so called Christians see nothing wrong with marriage divorce, especially when it concerns them. But the Bible is very clear about marriage and divorce.

God, through the prophets emphasized three principles relating to marriage:

Marriage is sacred and meant for a husband and a wife

Marriage is designed for companionship and reproduction

God hates/despise divorce ( See Gen. 2:18-23 and Mal. 2:13-16)

Christ in his own days related the sacredness and significance of marriage in His own teachings. However, the Pharisees wanted to find out where He stood on the matter of divorce but in His wisdom, he replied by taking them on a masterclass on marriage. Jesus began by taking them to the origin of marriage, quoting Genesis 2:24: "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh" (Matthew 19:5). The verse has remained a blueprint for marriage from the Old Testament to the New Testament.

Marriage involves the act of leaving your parents and cleaving to your partner and being united physically, emotionally, biologically, psychologically, spiritually and in all wise. This is in fact, the representation of the "one-flesh" in the biblical context of marriage which sets before us God's perfect plan for a good lasting and romantic marriage.

Unsatisfied, the Pharisees persisted with their questions about divorce, now referencing the commands of Moses in the Old Testament for the man to write a letter of divorce when trying to do away with his wife. But Jesus surprised them when He made them understand divorce is never ideal. The Scripture says “For I hate divorce!” says the Lord, the God of Israel. “To divorce your wife is to overwhelm her with cruelty,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “So guard your heart; do not be unfaithful to your wife.” (Mal. 2:16)

According to Jesus, there is only one condition for divorce: sexual immorality. Any other reason is simply not acceptable. In furtherance to His response to the Pharisees, Jesus said to them, “Moses permitted you to divorce because your hearts are so hard and stubborn, but originally there was no such thing. But I say to you, whoever leaves his wife for any reason other than immorality, then takes another wife is living in adultery. And whoever takes a divorced woman in marriage is also living in adultery.” Matthew 19:8‭-‬9 TPT

If you ever heard anything contrary to this as a justification for divorce, no matter who says it, it is not a biblical truth and should not be acceptable in the society.
